ACADEMIC ADVANTAGE classes starting soon… small group instruction in Reading/Language Arts or Math To download this information, click here. Taught by Barb Anderson, a local educator for 17 years, your child will benefit from structured instruction that is creatively adapted to individual learning needs. And you can rest easy knowing that your child will be on track with his/her learning! Instruction will be delivered in four one-hour lessons per week. ACADEMIC ADVANTAGE LANGUAGE ARTS I, II, III - (Reading/Writing – Exploding the Code Phonics Curriculum + supplementary) Skill Level I: “Learning to Read” – Letter recognition; phonemic (sounds) awareness; sound/letter association; rhyming; beginning phonics decoding skills; blending; basic sight words. Skill Level II: “Becoming an Independent Reader” – Build on reading knowledge already acquired; continued phonics skills reinforcement/practice; build reading fluency; expand basic sight words; vocabulary; writing process – basic grammar, simple mechanics, and expressing self in writing sentences and simple paragraphs. Skill Level III: “Reading for Understanding and Connections” – Continue to build reading fluency; emphasis on building comprehension skills and strategies; analyzing stories; expand vocabulary; writing process – grammar, mechanics, expressing self in writing through paragraphs and essays. ACADEMIC ADVANTAGE MATH I, II, III – (Singapore Math curriculum) Skill Level I: Primary Math – Numbers, addition/subtraction number stories and sentences, order, shapes, measurement, and beginning word problems. Skill Level II: Intermediate Math – Numbers, place value, addition without/with renaming, addition/subtraction number stories and sentences, multiplication/division concepts, sentences, and facts, multiplication tables, measurement, word problems, fractions, mixed numbers, and basic geometry concepts. Skill Level III: Intermediate Plus Math – Multiplication/division concepts and word problems, multiplication tables mastery, fractions, geometry concepts, measurement, ratios, word problems, beginning algebraic expressions, ratio/percentage, speed.
